hollywood, hear me out!
Like the word indicates, it is Latin America, we are taught that America is one continent divided into North, South and Central. The rest of the continents according to schools in most countries are: Asia, Oceania (Australia), Africa and Europe. I was very confused when I arrived to the States to learn that they teach seven continents instead of five. But then again, I was also confused by the metric system -Fahrenheit instead of Centigrade.
But what really made me admit a lack of geographic culture was this comment: "You're from Venezuela? I have a friend in Argentina." It happened several times; sometimes it could vary to Chile or Ecuador. Venezuela is closer to New York than to any of those countries. The only thing in common is the language, so needless to remark, it's like me saying, "You're from Maine? I have friend in Arizona!" It sounds stupid, right?
In this case, I am not here to criticize or compare cultures, but I did have to point that out because it's significant to understand that not all countries in South America are exactly the same, some are not even alike and most importantly, the accents are ALL different; so for us, to watch a film in which a character is supposed to be Mexican, speaking with a Colombian accent, is basically an insult to our heritage; Hollywood can trick the American audience, but it cannot trick the 400 million people who can recognize the accents. Touché
I cannot name the movies in which this incident happens because there are too many. Let's persuade Producers to make movies by casting right, not wrong. You cannot generalize by giving a Latina role to a person who LOOKS the part but cannot speak the part correctly. For starters, if you're the owner of a project that involves Hispanics/Latinos, let me now how I can help make it more REAL; let me help you communicate accurately.
I can help you in Spanish, different accents available.
Thanks. One Love
